I fought a ticket once and won. It was up north and there were a lot of natives and a couple of court house lawyers that could not get on at legal aid. It was quite an experience. I won because the constable claimed to have made a visual i.d. of my vehicle after dark. I could sense some antagonism between the cop and the judge so I think that is how I really won.

The RCMP and city cops seldom get their man anymore. I witnessed a scene at the mines branch here where a prospector had come in from Ontario to stake some claims. The process involved lining up in a que for two weeks. A major company was first in line and actually were in advance of the que being announced. Anyway, he got in line and took first place when somebody fell out of line and within three hours lawyers for the company (at midnight) had an ex parte order throwing him out of line. He balked at that and they threw him in jail. He got out later that night and the next day there was a paddy wagon there just in case. I have pictures of the whole thing. It is the most amazing thing I have ever been involved in. The chief lawyer for the company was directing cops like a traffic cop directs traffic.

We have a legal system, not a justice system.
