I can't imagine her pain- truly. But are laws made to "memorialize people" ? Reacting to the emotional plea of a devastated family for something you do not believe is in the best interests of the law overall might be the mark of an "I feel your pain" type leader, but I've had enough of that.
"We had an opportunity to do something for our whole family. He did nothing."
Again- a personal need- Laws should not be about one case, one family, no matter how terrible.
These are emotionally manipulative arguments and Gore used Ms. Harris shamelessly. This is a difference in the candidates' beliefs in the adequacy of existing laws. I personally side with GW on this one, but it certainly has nothing to do with any lack of sympathy for the Byrd family.
