Paul: I just got around to reading the Intel Annual Report and found a most interesting fact on page 35. In 1966, Intel spent an astonishing $5.3 billion on investments. This is more than the $3 billion spent on capital expenditures, and a bit more than the $5.1 billion earnings.This means that you get a piece of a venture capital high tech "fund" when you buy INTC, and even more important it gives Intel the ability to manage its earnings. All Intel has to do to increase earnings is to invest less. This should result in less erratic, more predictable earnings, and thus hopefully in a higher P/E ratio. Changes in the P/E ratio are the quickest way to profits.
