Right. There are already laws against murder. That has historically been of little comfort to black victims in Texas and across the south. Not to mention gays. The point of hate-crime legislation is that it sends a message about the kind of society we have in this country. The arguments against tough and inclusive hate-crime legislation on this thread are akin to the arguments that used to be used against passage of civil-rights legislation in general. The arguments were complacent at best then; the same is true now.
