Weeding and stock picking- same here.
Round-up substitute huh? I know what that means; dirty knees!! Just finished weeding my front half circle on the driveway yesterday. Nice thing about California, is if you don't water, then no weeds (for much of the year). But I planted some ground cover, and while its getting established, water and weed, water and weed.
Creditman, My (small) backyard is the "Lost World". I've stuffed it with two cherries, three persimmons, one walnut, one apricot, one peach, boysenberry patch, and compost heap. In addition I've got the most incredible climbing vine you ever saw. The Vietnamese call it Xiu xiu (pronounced tsue tsue); the Mexicans have a very similar vine called Chayote. The thing can grow about a foot a day, and can easily go 100 feet in a season. It goes over my fence into my neighbors. My Vietnamese neighbors have built a trellis that covers third of their backyard for it. They get an amazing crop ( it looks like green squash). Every winter the thing dies back to the root, then grows up again the following year.
Well I bought some PGTZ last week as well. Hope your all having a good holiday weekend, I'm off to the family BBQ. (Rich, I'll comment on the NY Times article later on ECM thread after I've thought a while.)
