I have always believed that it is not only one's right to vote but also one's duty.

I have voted in every election for which I have been eligible to vote with one and only one exception. The exception was in one municipal election for a city in which I regarded myself as merely a temporary resident. I had been in that city only just long enough to qualify to vote but was planning to move out about one week after the election. Therefore I did not feel that I had the moral right to vote.

Nevertheless ... I did show up at the polling booth and I did cast my ballot in order not to be counted among those who had not voted. Because I felt that I should not vote I deliberately destroyed my ballot.

Perhaps I might have regretted my action later except that fortunately virtually all of the candidates for whom I otherwise would have voted were elected by considerable margins. Since then I have never been in a similar situation but I now have reversed my thinking and would not have destroyed my ballot if I had it to do over again.

Perhaps my current thinking is based on the fact that currently I cannot vote anywhere. As a Canadian I can only vote if I fulfill a residency requirement and I have been absent from Canada for well over a decade. Still I am following the upcoming Canadian election as though I were able to vote. Well, enough waxing political. My belief is ...

If you have the right to vote ... GET OUT AND DO IT!!!
