Infineon revenues up 82% in quarter with surge in memory sales

MUNICH -- Infineon Technologies AG here today reported revenues surged 82% to 2.38 billion euros ($2.07 billion) in the company's fiscal fourth quarter, ended Sept. 30, compared to 1.31 billion euros ($1.14 billion) in the same period last year. Infineon said its revenues were up sequentially 30% from 1.83 billion euros in the third fiscal quarter, ended June 30.

Infineon's net income in the fiscal fourth quarter totaled 581 million euros ($505.5 million), compared to 36 million euros ($54.8 million) in the period last year.

The former semiconductor division of Siemens AG beat Wall Street's consensus for earnings per share in the fiscal fourth quarter. Infineon posted earnings of $0.81 per share ($0.93 euro) vs. the consensus of $0.51, based on a recent survey of financial analysts by First Call/Thomson Financial.

Infineon said its memory products operation showed the strongest increase in revenues during the fiscal fourth quarter. Memory sales grew 47% to 1.27 billion euros ($1.1 billion) in the period compared to the prior fiscal third quarter. Year-over-year, memory revenues were up 168% from sales in the fiscal fourth quarter of 1999, said Infineon.

In the fiscal fourth quarter, Infineon's wireless group revenues reached 351 million euros ($305.4 million), an increase of 17% from the prior three-month period and 30% from the same quarter last year.

For the entire fiscal 2000 year, ended Sept. 30, the Munich chip maker posted record revenues of 7.28 billion euros ($6.3 billion), an increase of 72% from last year's 4.24 billion euros ($3.69 billion). Infineon's net income for the 2000 fiscal year totaled 1.13 billion euros ($980 million) vs. just 61 million euros (53.1 million) in the 1999 year.
