Roebear,
I haven't heard of that book, but "The Schwarzbein Principle" (also, the old "Carbohydrate's Addict" and "Everything You Wanted to Know About Dieting (Rubin?)") point out a lot of what the 4 evils (refined sugar, refined flour, corn syrup, any "fake" sugar (eg aspartame)) can do to a human body. Go to Kroger's in, say, Indiana, and observe what 30-40 years of living on General Food's and Pillsbury's creations comprised of the 4 evils can do to homo sapiens sapiens. It's at the least unnatural, if not criminal. 48 inch waists, hypertension, obesity, type II diabetes, etc. etc. These conditions simply do not exist in countries without massive supplies of overprocessed foods.
As for safety on the highways, until we can create a device which measures a person's sleep debt the way they can measure alcohol level, we are basically s.o.l. on the highways, particularly state highways and country roads during the night time hours. At least the drinking driver has an idea that he's been drinking; the sleep deprived generally do not have a clue.
