Dale, I'm wading thru the CCBL 2000 annual report and 10-K, looking for information on fiber optics products and sales, thought I'd post some of it.

snip from annual report
"Fiber sales were up 70% and services up 22%."

snip from 10-K
"Telecommunications equipment sales increased by 35% to $239.3 million in fiscal year 2000 from $176.8 million in fiscal year 1999. The increase was attributable to sales growth in RF and fiber optic products."

snip from annual report
"JDS Uniphase is working with CCBL thru an OEM agreement to incorporate JDS's fiber-optic lasers into their headend products."

snip from 10-K
"headend amplifiers are suitable for wave division multiplexing WDM and DWDM"

Snip from annual report
"Four acquistions in 1999
Acquired Silicon Valley Communications allowing us to add fiber optic products. Acquired Convergence Corporation, offering network management enabling services and products.
Acquired Advance Communications and Worldbridge Broadband Services expanding our customer base.

"Six new strategic partners in 1999."
In fiberoptics co-developing fiber optics products with FNSR Finisar Corporation. OEM agreement with JDSU JDS Uniphase."

"We hold 14 United States patents for various inventions relating to fiber optics and Radion Frequency transmission equipment and technology and network management services."

"Increase in research and product development primarily for the development of fiber optic transmission products, including transmitters, receivers and amplifiers."

Although CCBL customers primarily operate HFC networks CCBL is making significant progress in providing fiber optics and Radio Frequency products and services.

CCBL has good diversity in revenues from products and services with
a)Telcommunication equipment
b)Broadband Mangement Sevices including data security, software, engineering maintenence and tech support
c)Total Network Solutions, maintenence
d)Headend Equipment
e)Nodes which convert optical signals to RF signals for distribution to the home
f)RF amplifiers and RF products

CCBL has a good strategic business plan and seems to be a well run company. I'm betting CCBL is well positioned to provide a full range of broadband products and services in the future.

The optical networking industry is a strange new world these days. I confess it is unlikely I can figure out the likely winners and losers in the optical space, that's why I'm playing optical thru LDP.

Marconi MONI also looks interesting. MRVC is quite the optical rage. MRVC is currently suppyling optical equipment to Marconi thru Luminet LMNE but that could change tomorrow.
NT ALA LU MONI can buy products from the "Optical flavor" of the month, or they can spend $1 billion for any new FO company they want. Not every new optical IPO gets a JDSU valuation.

Thru acquisitions, OEM's and strategic partners that CCBL is making to broaden their customer base seems to be good plan to grow a broadband company. Less risky than trying to keep inventing the fastest optical switch.

I'm not sure how data from fiber optic networks gets to "my house" but there is quite a bit of broadband products, services, support, engineering and management revenue to be generated from the "end users." I assume last mile data from optical networks will still be transmitted thru RF or cable to "my house" for a long time to come.
