Unfortunately, Americans care only about their wallets. Have you ever noticed the correlation between the Presidential Approval Rating and the Consumer Confidence Index?

In 1998, before the seriousness of the LTCM fiasco was fully known, many observers were blaming the market decline on the revelations about Clinton's affair with "that woman". Yet, the timing of the release of key information on the Lewinsky story is today not considered an explanation for the 1998 near-crash. In my opinion, the impact of LTCM on market psychology was no greater than the impact of the Lewinsky story.
