Agreed. In my college days I experimented with the occasional recreational substance, and I never robbed anyone or harmed anybody. And I managed to graduate with nearly a 4.0 average. The local frat boys getting totally smashed on alcohol and date-raping coeds or damaging school property were certainly a much bigger problem for the community than a few hippies smoking a joint and getting the munchies.

Putting non-violent people in jail is a crime. Other forms of punishment exist that dont cost anywhere near as much and don't turn first-time offenders into hardened criminals pissed off at society.

Prohibition was eventually outlawed, and I think existing draconian drug laws will be too.

If you drive a city bus or fly a plane high on coke, you ARE committing a violent crime, just like drunk driving, because you can very easily harm other people. But if you're sitting in your house after a hard days work and want to light up, the government should keep their nose out of it.

(and no, i dont use those substances anymore, but i sure had fun when i did as a kid!)
