I haven't been crazy over either candidate. However, Gore seemed to be more suited to my feelings than Bush. In addition, living in Florida and being a teacher, I don't have much good to say for the Bush plan for education. People often assume it's the voucher system, actually, it's much more than that and for me, that's not even the major thing. If the public only knew what his ideas are doing to kids. As a veteran teacher, when I close the door to my classroom, I do what my experience says is right for kids, regardless of how I'm directed to do. Unfortunately, younger teachers are often afraid to do that and comply with directions that they know don't work for kids. Anyway, went to bed around 11:30 or so knowing everything was undecided, at 2:30 my husband and I woke up briefly and I asked him to turn on the TV quickly and with a cursory look, he said he thought Gore won Florida and we could hear music/celebrating in TN. So, I went back to sleep thinking Gore was president. Then, this morning. To find that so few votes in Florida separated a win. This should be the perfect example of why everyone's vote is so important. It definitely will be the focus of my discussion with my students today. Whoever wins, it takes more than a president to make change. You need congress working together with that president. So, anyone who predicted gloom and doom if either person was elected, I don't really see that case. Someone posted on SI that if Bush won the market would rally and if Gore won it would tank. I really doubt that. Anyway, hopefully things will be clarified today. For me, I'm sick. I don't think my daughter and her room mate voted. They're both away at college and I didn't think, in time, to remind them to get an absentee ballot. I'm not proud of that. In retrospect, I'd have carried them on my back to get one, if necessary. Every vote does matter. Lesson learned.
Anyway, if, when the votes are completely counted, Bush is the president, congratulations to those of you who supported him. (Of course, I'm still hoping for Gore.:)) We each have to vote in the manner that we think is best and thank heavens we have a major two party system where we do have choices and not a dictatorship. Whoever is president, we'll survive. Wishing all of you the best and saying thank you for a super election night spent with some fine people. Have a good day. We just had a night that was history in the making...
