Networks Berated for Early Florida Projection

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republicans berated major U.S. television networks on Tuesday for jumping the gun and first projecting that Democrat Al Gore (news - web sites) would win Florida's pivotal 25 electoral votes and then withdrawing that forecast.

``You all called Florida before Florida even closed its polls,'' Karl Rove, chief strategist for Republican nominee George W. Bush (news - web sites) complained on CNN.

``I just think this whole issue of calling states on the basis of exit polling is something that needs to be taken another serious look at, just like the whole issue of running all these polls in the midst of the campaign,'' he said.

Former Republican Secretary of Education William Bennett suggested the early call could have affected voting elsewhere.

``You don't call a state like Florida, as big and critical as Florida, and then take it back off the board. This affects how people think, it takes the air out of people's enthusiasm,'' Bennett told CNN.
