The Florida recount should determine the winner. But will it? My guess is that Bush would come out on top among the absentee ballots, particularly those from overseas. However, there appears a major voting irregularity in the West Palm Beach area, which possibly could move the Florida results into the courts. The other question looming in Florida is: Did voters who have winter homes in Florida vote in two states? Another issue which could come out if the matter reaches the courts.
I don't discount the possibility Floridians might have to vote again if the present results are invalidated by the courts.
Another possibility: Now that the press has names of Bush drinking buddies, from the Maine DUI incident, will further scrutiny of him and those folks, and their friends, cause more scandal to come out?
After all, why didn't Bush tell us about the DUI as it wouldn't have mattered much? Could it be that there's some other stuff in Bush's background he doesn't want the public to know about. I thought using his voting age children as an excuse not to tell the American people was lame and smacks of a cover-up. Heck, his two 18-year-olds, as voters, even had a right to know about the Maine incident.
Anyway, should something like this happen--and now the press has an opening in time to dig deeper--it wouldn't surprise me to see some electoral college electors alternatively shift their vote for Gore.
Whatever happens, it's been an interesting election and one which I hope will inspire more voters to participate in future ones. |
