NG: The last chapter of the Kennedy-Nixon story is that the Democrats offered to put up the Chicago votes for a re-count if the GOP would put up the votes for southern Illinois. No deal--. ??? It was at this point that the GOP honchos went to Nixon to tell him not to challenge the result and instead to eye a future presidency.

It seems to me that you've got to be pretty suspicious of that Palm Beach ballot. It was clearly designed to be confusing for Gore voters. Sometime around 5 a.m., I saw a report on CNN or NBC that Democrats in at least three other counties were complaining about similar confusion on their ballots. Two of the counties were Dade (which is moderately Democrat) and Broward (heavily Democrat). I don't recall the third and, when I heard it, didn't know which way it would lean. I wonder what W and Jeb gave the printer.

What other deals were being made -- and still are! -- well, I guess we'll never know. We should at least know who made the best deal in a couple of days!

BTW: my favorite conspiracy in all this is that Bill Clinton bought the Fla elections on the premise that a protracted court battle over the result (and you can bet there will be one if there's no clean resolution to these irregularities) could leave him in a position to offer to serve longer. <G>
