Prolifer: Dem polls in Missouri only stayed open an extra 45 minutes. Dems got one of Gephardt's judge friends (circuit judge) to keep polls open until 10 or 11, but Repubs were alert and got Court of Appeals to invalidate circuit judge's ruling pronto. So the polls only stayed open an extra 45 minutes. Didn't make any diff for Ashcroft, though. Ashcroft's problem wasn't the Dems, it was his lack of support among Repubs. That's what cost him the misfortune of losing to a guy 6 feet under. Good buddy of mine is a big-shot Repub attorney in mid-Missouri, and he said Ashcroft did a lot of hollering, but didn't bring in much for the state. That's why he got beat ... bigger factor than sympathy for Mel was his do-nothing record in recent years.
