I hope so too. I voted for Bush, though it was a very difficult and close decision (I seem to be a perfect microcosm of the United States). I had hoped the Dems would take the Senate to keep W in line on judicial appointments and such, but the narrow split (probably 51-49 for the Reps) is probably good enough. The rules of the Senate effectively require a supermajority of 60 to pass anything important.

Its pretty unusual for a party to take back the presidency while giving ground in both houses of Congress. Bush had no coattails whatsoever, the Republicans in Congress owe him nothing. Nor is he a great Communicator like Reagan or a skillful gamesman like Clinton or a backslapping wheeler-dealer like LBJ. His approach in Texas has been to be broadly accommodating and bipartisan. When he gets his head handed to him by the legislature, he graciously signs the bill and then takes credit for it. I expect a similar approach in Washington.

If Gore pulls a rabbit out of his hat in Florida, expect four years of bitter acrimony. The Reps are beside themselves with hatred for Clinton and will no doubt make Al pay for Bill's sins as well as a few of his own.

Bottom line is that four years from now we won't be talking about the expansion plans for Mount Rushmore.
