There is another reason for the Electoral College besides trying to even out the voting power between the larger vs smaller states. But I can't remember the reason... I believe it was that the popular vote wasn't completely trusted and the writers of the constitution thought that the electors could vote for someone else if the people had made a really stupid choice.
