I don't think the electors are allowed to defect. You are probably right but they have in the past and their votes were accepted anyway. Of course in those instances there were landslides and some jerk voted for his dad or mickey. In this case, a smart elector could parlay a supposed vote of conscience into a book deal and an appearance on Oprah.
