The recount is according to Florida law, not a request by anyone. There is no crisis, nor will there be. If the vote stands up, Bush will President. If not, Gore will be. If Bush does become President, I would hope he is clear in an acknowledgement that he did not win the popular vote, but the Electoral Vote, and that he will govern as he has said he will, as a unifier.

Madison and others wanted a president elected by popular vote but had to compromise with those of our founders who wanted the president elected by Congress out of distrust of the passions of the people, not just those in small states worried about representation in the vote. That original distrust by some of our founders of the people of this nation has led to this. But it will no more bring us down than anything, nor will even be a crisis. Might bring about some change, though.
