All the pre-election statistical models relating U.S. election results to the health of the economy, etc. showed the results to be a landslide for Gore (up by at least 10% popular vote). If Bush wins, this was a major upset. Read whatever you want into why it occurred.

There are major differences between the candidates, but from your perspective you might not be able to recognize them. It could be caused by the "I'm a (substitute a racial/ethnic/species group here) and all (substitute a different racial/ethnic/species group here) look alike to me" effect.
