Amy:

Re: Are you saying the government is allowing someone else to take the job that another person was voted to win? i.e. Did the ballot have his first name or her first name on it?

Windsock already accurately answered this. The losing candidate, Sen. John Ashcroft, has said he won't contest the election. However, other groups (Missouri Republicans, other conservative groups) probably will take it to court. There are two arguments. One is a law that says a candidate has to be a resident of the state to be elected, and of course Mr. Carnahan is no longer a resident. The second relates to the Democratic governor promising the job to the widow, which apparently also violates some law. The bad part is that if it does go to court and drags on for months, Missouri will be without adequate representation in the Senate until it is all straightened out.
