To deliver the 15 percent to 20 percent revenue growth that investors expect, Barrett said the company targeted fast-growing new markets that played to the company's strengths. Ulti mately, Intel has decided to focus on producing networking components at the core of the Internet infrastructure, as well as manufacturing components and software used in cell phones and handheld devices. While both areas have experienced strong 50 percent annual growth, as opposed to the 15 percent to 20 percent growth for microprocessors, they are also intensely competitive markets with sizable and well-entrenched players. For example, Intel purchased DSP Communications Inc. last year for $1 billion, but the market is dominated by Texas Instruments Inc.
