ViA says it will use Transmeta chip in wearable computer

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Following on its successful initial public offering, upstart computer-chip maker Transmeta Corp. Thursday is expected to announce that computer maker ViA Inc. will use its low-power Crusoe processor in a wearable computer it plans to produce.

ViA said that the first versions of its wearable PC are now being used by the U.S. Army Military Police in tests at Fort Polk, La., and elsewhere. The Crusoe chip will be used in the next iteration of the wearable PC.

ViA said that it chose the Crusoe chip because of its low-power consumption, low-heat generation while still having adequate processing power.

In addition to aiming the chip at laptop computers -- where it will go head-to-head with offerings from Intel Corp.

-- Transmeta is angling to have the Crusoe chip designed into Internet appliances.

Late Monday, Santa Clara, Calif.-based Transmeta raised $237 million in an IPO by selling 13 million shares at $21 each, more than the expected range of $16-to-$18. The shares more than doubled when they started trading on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, the stock rose 23/64 to $45-39/64 on the Nasdaq.
