Actually, it is much simpler than that. Liberals discredited themselves in the '60s by pandering to the youth culture, and compromised themselves by condoning draft card burning, taking a lackaidaisical attitude to recreational sex, and having knee jerk responses to urban rioting ( which became a method of extortion}. It all culminated in the identification of contemporary liberalism with McGovern. The word was already tainted for the Silent Majority and their progeny........
