If you ever have to hospitalize an elderly person be sure to know your Medicare benefits backwards and forwards. It pays for less than you think. The hospitals release people ostensibly on the grounds that they are fit to come home. In reality, they release them based on how many days Medicare pays for.

The nurses, for example, come out of our pocket. We pay $18.50 an hour, plus double time for holidays, 32 hours a day. Medicare does not pick up any of that stuff.
