There is another reason for an electoral college. It may cut down on the impact of cheating. Stuffing the ballot boxes can only effect the outcome of one state. If that state turns out to be important and close, it's a lot easier to scrutinize than trying to look closely at every polling spot in the country. And yes, ballot dirty tricks still go on, especially in those large cities where old time political machines are at work. Memphis and Chicago are examples that come to mind.
Politically, the chances of passing a constitutional amendment doing away with the present system are probably nil at this time.
