Dan,

Clinton got the most votes in both his presidential elections. W didn't. Why should Democrats give W more legitimacy that Republicans gave Clinton?

W. got more votes. Higher percentage of people voted for him than for Clinton. Higher percentage of people voted against Clinton than against Bush.

After the president is sworn in (whoever he is), the person running against him is a non-entity. Who cared about Bush Sr., Dole, Perot after Clinton was president? If we had a parliament and these men (the losers) were the leaders of the opposition, if they were part of the process, they would retain some legitimacy. But our system gives nothing to the presidential runner-up.
