Re Bush-Gore. I'm a Gore supporter but this is a tough situation. It's simplistic to treat this as Gore being a sore loser. We're in the midst of a kind of cultural war here. It would be very painful for many of us to have Republicans move the country toward cultural conservatism. Thus Gore has an obligation to the 50M voters who supported him. On the other hand challenging the vote could be very difficult for the country. Gore has to make very tough decisions here. It's not about being a gentleman or not.

Regarding the Palm Beach vote it does appear that they violated FL election law by placing Presidential candidates on both sides of the form. It would just be a technicality of no consequence normally but according to 2 networks up to 17K votes were invalidated because two holes were punched. Officials are admitting that most of those had Gore and Buchanan punched. So it's not just 3000 or so. Obviously in this predominately dem/jewish area 17K people did not intend to vote for Buchanan. Thus a re-vote in this area would likely overturn the election.

The crux of the problem is that if Bush is confirmed given the 17K votes disqualified in Palm Beach, it will be easy to feel it was an error but that will not impair Republican efforts to make significant changes. That would be very difficult for many dems. On the other hand if Gore is selected, Republicans will likely have a very difficult time accepting it. It wouldn't be such an issue if the cultural issues weren't in such stark contrast. Rich
