People instinctively know that categorizing them by intelligence can then be equated to value.

I'd argue that our whole system does that all ready. Do you want substandard people working on your brain if you have a tumor? I don't. Heck I want him to be smarter than me preferably. Will he get paid more than me? Probably. But so do sports figures. And I think the brain surgeon is more valuable to society and rarer.

Genetics is showing us that natural athletes have better metabolism than non-athletes. At the Olympic level this is compounded and so, in a way, the Olympics aren't just about who trained harder, but who has the better genetics. They may also have a better muscle brain that allows the dropping of endorphines into the blood stream during high exercise levels. I've exercised a lot and I never really got the "runner's high", but I know people that have. My endurance is better than most people's and I can work out for long periods without rest. Like a farm animal. But don't enter me into any races.

Studies of intelligent people show that on a problem of given difficulty they metabolize less glucose in their brains. So if we are going to reward effort, well, smart people really aren't having to try that hard. Hiding from the truth doesn't make it go away. I think by acquiescing and hiding from the truth promotes ignorance. Now ignorant intelligent people are REALLY dangerous because they can lead ignorant stupid people. History is replete with examples of that.
