Re: But like you said.. sometimes you have to be an outsider to see some of these things in perspective...
And I think Americans don't realize the extent to which their "domestic" Presidential election is closely tracked overseas. Political leaders from around the world and particularly in Europe voice their leanings about the future US President --and, believe me, they're as anxious, or even more anxious, than most American voters.... Just imagine that, on the eve of France's presidential election, Pres. Clinton publicly discloses his preference for, say, the Socialist contender --such an "outing" would be considered as an incredible diplomatic interference, would it not? Well, over here, it's quite normal for our local politicos to despise GW Bush as a nonstarter and praise Al Gore as a "European" gentleman....
So it's no wonder that the US election process, somehow, is "under influence", that is, outside influence.... Too much is at stake to let the whole presidential shebang in the hands of Joe Blow. After all, since economics got globalized and "national" policymaking doesn't make sense anymore, why should "national" elections still make sense?? Globalization is also true for politics.... That's why you should think twice about invalidating the Florida polls: if you nullify the whole Floridian balloting then UN observers are next.... <g> |
