Home cholesterol tests cost $10-13
Home test kits to measure blood cholesterol are about to have a second coming.
ChemTrak Inc., of Sunnyvale, Calif., expects its kits to sell for $10-$13 at stores nationwide in the next few weeks.
Johnson & Johnson dropped ChemTrak's kits from its line several months ago because sales fell short, says J&J's Jeffrey Leebaw. J&J priced the kits about $6 higher.
ChemTrak's Alene Holzman says the CholesTrak product now will be aimed at cholesterol-conscious consumers instead of everyone. "We need to target the people who really need the test," such as those already trying to control their cholesterol levels, Holzman says. One strategy: coupons for people filling prescriptions for cholesterol-lowering drugs.
"Our goal is to . . . concentrate on a smaller population that will use us more frequently," Holzman says, noting that typical users of the test bought it two or three times last year.
High blood cholesterol is a risk factor for heart disease, the nation's top killer.
Other home tests on the market include tests for ovulation, pregnancy, blood glucose, fecal blood, blood pressure and urinary tract infections.
