He never said that QCOM would take a hit for a few months, only that they would "take a hit" if ATT went GSM. One thing I will say about the decision, it would be a very circuitous path for a TDMA company to go to GSM to get to WCDMA - ATT's eventual 3G platform. Don't they have shareholders to which they are responsible? Going back to Seybold's predictions, I doubt that ATT's stock price would "pop". ATT will not be permitted by it's shareholders to waste more money by going from TDMA to GSM, a standard with a rapidly decaying half life 9maybe 3 years). What possible purpose would that serve? This whole notion that ATT made a mistake by adopting TDMA in the early days needs to relax. They wanted to get a lead time to the makret and went for it. Big deal. now, it's time for everyone to upgrade from TDMA and GSM to 3G CDMA to get high speed data. Does anyone think that VOD is happy about converting from GSM to WCDMA in Europe. I doubt it, but GSM can't to data. Really, ATT needs to stop act like a R & D company with a vested interest in the standards process and control itself by making the best investment decision for their wireless networks based on the economic comparisons. 1X HDR is the no brainer, and WCDMA is next best. However, with 1X doubling capacity as capacity requirements are directly increased with the introduction of new services, CDMA2000 has a big advantage over WCDMA. Personally, I think it would be great for the technology director at ATT wireless step down. I think engineer recommended some excellent replacements on the AWE thread the other day, namely, Craig Farrell.
