Amy, we'd be in a much bigger jam if we had gotten rid of the electoral college and gone to a pure popular vote. Given that the popular margin between Bush and Gore is around 100K votes, there would have been a nationwide recount. Thought that there were too many voting "irregularities" in the state of Florida alone? Think about how many you'll find across fifty states, plus the District of Columbia.

I'd still like to see the electoral college done away with, or at least reformed so that it's no longer "winner take all per state." But with any race that is extremely close, statistical error is always going to muddy the waters. Once that happens, you might as well flip a coin.
