GerPol: we are living in the age of mass miss-comunication
Talk about mass miss-communication. The election to the south is getting muddier and clearer all the time, thanks in no small part to the fact that the media takes a statement or an issue and blows it out of proportion.
Just a couple of hours ago, the Gore camp had a press conference, and implied that there were considerable irregularities with the fact that in Palm Beach County, Pat Buchanan had 3000 votes, far more than surrounding counties. They stated that the ballot was "illegal".
The Gore camp implied that Buchanan received so many votes in Palm Beach County because the butterfly ballot used is not only "illegal", but confusing. And they gave further credence to their argument citing the fact that 20,000 ballots were spoiled because people punched BOTH Gore and Buchanan.
They went further to imply that all of the spoiled ballots would have gone for Gore, in addition to most of the ones that went to Buchanan.
The Bush camp, in their own press conference, just now said that in fact, Palm Beach County enjoyed an increase in membership to the Reform Party since 1996 by 110%. Surrounding counties enjoyed an increase in Reform membership by as much as 38% over the previous election. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to presume that if the number of Reform members went up by 110% over the previous election, the number of people actually VOTING Reform would go up proportionately.
But, the Gore camp didn't say that in their statements. They specifically put a spin on their arguments, without stating all of the facts.
And, the Bush camp also stated in their press conference that the butterfly ballot, supposedly confusing, and supposedly "illegal", is the traditional ballot used in Palm Beach County elections.
And, the Bush camp also stated that Cook County in Illinois also uses the butterfly ballot, and there have been no complaints from there regarding a "confusing" ballot.
Have we had enough mass mis-communication? Probably not.
