FORE Systems' ATM Solution `Gets The Bid' From Network Computing PR Newswire - May 27, 1997 08:18 FINANCIAL FORE CPR PDT V%PRN P%PRN FORE Receives Top Honors in RFP Bid Over Cisco, 3Com and Seven Other Networking Vendors PITTSBURGH, May 27 /PRNewswire/ -- FORE Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: FORE), a worldwide leader in high-performance networking products based on ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) technology received top honors in Network Computing's May 15, 1997 "9 Solutions For An ATM Upgrade" feature. Network Computing evaluated proposals submitted by leading networking vendors for the hypothetical XYZ Electronic Widget Corporation's ATM backbone upgrade. XYZ's network, with over 18,000 end nodes, was in need of a major infrastructure overhaul. In the editors' evaluation of the nine vendor proposals submitted for the multiphase implementation, FORE "Gets the Bid" for the ATM backbone upgrade. Other vendors who responded include 3Com, Bay Networks, Cabletron Systems, Cisco Systems, Digital Equipment Corporation, IBM Corporation, Madge Networks, and Newbridge Networks. "Network Computing's Infrastructure RFP provides our readers with a real-world example of all of the aspects IT managers must consider when upgrading to an ATM backbone," commented Patricia Schnaidt, editorial director/ associate publisher of Network Computing. "We put nine vendors to the test, and FORE's ATM solution received Network Computing's Gets the Bid Award because of its scalable solution and integration with the existing infrastructure." "FORE at the core is once again proven as the ideal technology for ATM backbone connectivity," said Ron McKenzie, vice president of marketing, FORE Systems. "Network Computing's real-world scenario mirrors the decisions of today's customers, and we are pleased that our experience building the most and largest ATM networks in the world enabled FORE to develop a solution that `gets the bid' for the ATM upgrade." McKenzie also added that providing the most complete ATM RFP did not mean it was the most expensive. FORE's winning bid was far less expensive than the Cisco, 3Com, Bay Networks and Madge solutions. Network Computing's evaluation of FORE's winning RFP states, "The FORE Systems RFP provides XYZ with a unique balance of switched and shared Ethernet and a powerful ATM backbone. The FORE proposal gives XYZ a network that exceeds its immediate bandwidth needs, supports its multimedia training lab and leaves plenty of room for growth at the edge of the network. It deserves to get the RFP bid for the ATM upgrade." Network Computing's editors used experience in university and corporate environments to design a real-world example of today's corporate experience. XYZ Corporation is an 18,000 seat, multi-site example of a typical company that grew quickly, with a variety of equipment including repeaters, stackable hubs and bridges. The vendor RFP responses for the two-year implementation were required to include: an ATM backbone, an infrastructure centralizing servers in the network operations center, no single points of failure, increased desktop bandwidth, decreased congestion and collision rates, and multimedia services to XYZ's training lab. About FORE's Winning RFP Solution The FORE RFP solution reflects FORE's architectural philosophy of combining an ATM core with a switched edge. FORE's solution combines ForeRunner(R) ASX-200BX and ASX-1000 ATM Backbone switches at the core of the network interconnected via 622 Mbps (OC-12c), with 155 Mbps (OC-3c) connections going to the campus buildings. High-volume departments are connected to the backbone via OC-12c, with load-sharing 155 Mbps backup connections. Servers are directly connected to the ATM backbone at 155 Mbps. Edge connectivity is provided via PowerHub(R) 6000 and 7000 and ES-3810 products, with switched desktop connectivity provided to high-volume users. The Company's multimedia lab gets 25 Mbps ATM desktop connectivity.
