A prolonged constitutional crisis now seems unavoidable, regardless of the Florida results. Whether Gore or Bush claims an Electoral College majority, even if the other concedes to 'save the nation' their network of financial contributors, political supporters, and allies will not accept the result. Whoever the Electoral College (or the House of Representatives if it goes that far) declares to be the next president, he will be considered a usurper, a pretender. At any time during his term, should any domestic or foreign issue arise over which a significant number of Americans passionately divide, the Pretender will face a nation divided.

Those here who, for selfish or other reasons, glibly advocate against the Federal government as some kind of monster are about to get what they want: no federal government.
