Well, um, it sure looks to me like Mr. Bush's surrogates are engaging in the activities you cite in response to the actions of Mr. Gore's supporters. In effect, they're calling Gore's bluff. I think (hope, really) that both sides are bluffing. You'll note that we haven't seen either candidate speak directly, which IMO means they're both leaving room to back off. I don't think very highly of either man, but I think when it comes to it, the loser by the rules of the constitution will act in the best interest of the country.

The main risk as I see it is that there's too much of a time lag now built into the process. The recount will be over soon, and it looks like the margin of victory will be slimmer than the number of outstanding absentee ballots. If I were the (apparent) loser, I would not in good conscience be able to concede, lest I eventually triumph. So what would there be to do but continue to wait? As the saying goes, "Idle hands are the devil's plaything." Partisans of all stripes will be scuttling out from under the rocks for weeks to come.
