Hi Dennis,
I teach social studies at the middle school level and today one of my students, a strong supporter of Bush said to me something like, "He should just let Bush be president and he can run again." My response was that both men had spent a lot of their lives preparing for the presidency. They'd spent time, money, effort, etc. Something THIS important shouldn't be cast away easily. Whoever rightfully wins, wins. Now, I voted for Gore, but, if Bush wins I'll give him a fair chance to show us what he can do. I've already tried to look for the good in him and what he has to offer. But, personally, I'd go down fighting for something as major as the presidency if it were truly mine. This has nothing to do with being a good loser. It has to do with what is right. There's been a lot of talk about the ballot and how it was in the paper and people should have complained before if they didn't understand it. But, IMHO, when people look in the paper at a ballot, they're looking to see who the people are, not how they're going to utilize the ballot. Regardless, they THREW OUT over 19,000 ballots for being done incorrectly. Surely that shows something wrong with the format. If I gave my kids a test and a few said they didn't do well because of the format, I'd say they were just looking for an excuse. But, if a LARGE NUMBER of them didn't understand, I'd say, "Hey, what did I do wrong?" and I'd REDO THE TEST. In addition, as I've read, people started complaining to those poll workers at 7 in the morning regarding the construction of the ballot. It wasn't until 11 that info was sent out to voice caution in filling out the ballot. #1, Why did it take them so long to do that and #2, if they didn't think there was a concern, why did they voice caution? You know what, I live in Florida, not that area, but, if I did, I'd be down there carrying a sign and protesting myself. It has nothing to do with democrat or republican. I'm a republican myself. It has to do with right and wrong. What a terrible example we're setting for our kids if we don't correct this and make our children think that in America voting is sacred and a very special process. If this happened to Bush and his candidacy, I'd feel the same way. Let the person who truly got the votes of the people win this thing.
BTW, if I appear to be fired up about this, please don't think it is directed to you. I just responded to your post. I'm not attacking you.:)
Have a good evening.
Best Wishes, Doribee |
