RESTON, Va., Nov. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Nextel Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq: NXTL - news) today announced that it was pleased with the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) decision to increase available spectrum in the 800 MHz band for commercial use by 5 MHz from 21.5 MHz to 26.5 MHz. Nextel officials were encouraged by the news that the FCC also had issued a notice of proposed rule making which, if adopted, would offer Nextel access to an additional 5 MHz of spectrum in the 900 MHz band.
``The FCC's order will increase our spectrum position and enable our ability to more rapidly introduce the enhanced services our customers are demanding,'' said Tim Donahue, president and CEO of Nextel. ``I am also very pleased to see that the Commission is being progressive in considering additional spectrum allocation moves to address the ever increasing demands by the marketplace.''
Further, the FCC adopted a policy statement providing flexibility in spectrum leasing arrangements. Nextel said that the FCC Chairman Kennard initiative in ``secondary markets'' will provide it opportunities for even more additional spectrum. |
