25 years ago, the the Swedish parliamentary system was reformed. Instead of two "houses", there was to be a single body consisting of 350 members.
In the first election, the socialistic block got 175 seats and the conservative block also 175 seats. It was also very close with the postal votes determining the outcome.

We then had four years of actually "flipping a coin" to resolve ties in voting. However, most of the time, somebody was absent, asleep or pressing the wrong button, so there were not that many issues that had to be determined by chance.
The decision to change the number of seats to 349 was unanimous.

I think the US situation should be regarded as a tie and (as in golf) the two leaders and no others should go through with a play-off second election.
