HERE'S MY TAKE: There's a 95% chance that GWB will win the Florida vote taken on November 7 and the absentee ballots to be counted by next Friday. Legally, he will be entitled to the 25 electoral votes. Potential developments in other states notwithstanding, he will have 271 electoral votes, and will be the duly elected 43rd President.
Now, here's what's going to happen. The Gore camp is going to try to win this in the court of public opinion. They're going to try to jimmy-loose the 19,000+ votes in Palm Beach County that were legally null and void under Florida law. They'll have every party standard-bearer running around Florida and the Rosie O'Donnell show proclaiming the will of the people has been illegally subverted. Which, of course, is totally inaccurate.
They're going to moan and whine, and the like until we're all beyond the point of serial vomiting. They're going to throw all sorts of BS up against the wall, while praying to god something sticks.
If the courts are apolitical about this, they will dismiss the suits, and let the election stand. They will have state law and precedent on their side.
If the courts are political about it, expect it to go to the US Supreme Court, or as far as Al will push it.
Their conduct today is reprehensible, and proves that they will stop at nothing, cast any and all innuendo and aspersions they can come up with, for the purpose of winning the election. If they can't be successful, then they will be happy to claim that GWB doesn't deserve it.
This is a sad day for America, and I pray that the courts will throw this crap out into the gutter where it belongs.
In order for their case to have merit, they must demonstrate that it was an intentional act by the authorities that caused the ballots to be marked incorrectly, or they must prove fraud.
The only fraud here, are the cases themselves.
