I don't believe any states were called until the polls were closed in California. Could have had an impact in Alaska and Hawaii.. but that's about it.

Actually, the networks' policies on that are all the same. They will not call a state until the polls in that state are closed. That is why on at least one network on Tuesday there was a clock counting down the last few minutes until the next states' polls closed .... and then there would be a flurry of announcements. Florida was called at 5 p.m. California time, for example.

Trouble was, the New York-based numbskulls who run that system know little about the provinces.... and about the fact that Florida is the only state on the Atlantic Coast which also includes a portion in the Central Time Zone (in the panhandle, near Mobile, AL). I was in Mobile last week, and Florida is a very short distance away. It is a largely Republican area of Florida. When the polls were still open in that area, the networks were telling voters that their state had already selected Gore. As far as I know it is the only time this election that a state was called while its polls were still open.

Funny coincidence that we are now down to a vote in which about 5 votes per county separates the winner and loser. I wonder if anybody thinking about voting there decided not to bother during those last 45 minutes due to the premature call.

The amazing story of this election will be told long after we have ceased to care about the issues these candidates differ on.
