Do we wish for Mr. Bush to assume the presidency on the strength of a mistake by a poll worker, this after losing
the national popular vote?

Based on the conditions of the sample ballot and the actual ballot, and based on the "will of the people," I easily see the court overturning the results of the Palm Beach County vote. The only question is: How will it do so?

Given that it will, Mr. Bush's clock is ticking. And each passing tick means he'll lose the opportunity to become a national hero by conceding to Bush. If a court does it for him, he'll go down as a footnote in history as just another frat boy from a famous family who wanted to make the big-time. Were he to concede Florida to Mr. Gore, as a previous writer noted, he'd be an American hero of George Washington proportion.

Interesting choice, huh?

Politics IS concession. To accept something today in order to make a better tomorrow. Bush's dad should give George W. yet another lesson: Encourage him to concede to Gore.
