You're forgetting about the pre-personal PC era. AMD's bit slice chips were used in dozens of minicomputers like DEC, Data General, Prime and many names you never heard of. AMD's parts always ran faster than the competition. Their stuff was bipolar low-power Schottky or "LS" for short. Jerry was CEO then too, and I recall that one year AMD was even voted to be the best company in the US to work for, a notch ahead of HP.

Then the microprocessor "happened." Their high-speed reputation made them a natural for a choice from Intel as second source, but eventually Intel got tired of that arrangement...

and the rest is history.
