Mark: Exactly so. LWS over on Yahoo had an excellent summation as to the why behind Telecordia "linking arms" with VLNC as opposed to an outright sell of the patents to anybody. It amounts to this logic.....should anyone try to leverage off of Telecordia's patents then, given the depth of VLNC's research and patents the odds are this attempt would walk directly into the arms of VLNC's patent infringement sphere. And should anyone try to leverage off of VLNC's patents odds are they'd waltz right into Telecordia's infringement sphere.

So rather than butt heads in this sector to no ones advantage, why not link arms and cut a wide path through the sector over the next few years? It's a win/win for EVERYONE!

I continue to be amazed at this move. Have you ever played the Asian game Go? It's the subtle game played with stones that have one side white, and one side black. The object of the game is to leave the game board with more stones of your color than your opponents; and you do this by strategically arranging your stones to "convert" the colors of your opponent. I've seen game tactics used which at first appear to leave one caught in a dwindling base of colored stones and thus fraught with the possibility of losing the game. However, if you think forward far enough, and strategically enough, you get to a sudden position where the next move with your reduced numbers suddenly effects a jujitsu flip on your opponent and WHAM! You own most of the board with your men and go on to win the game!

In effect the Telecordia announcement yesterday appears to be just such a jujitsu flip. In one fell swoop the competition appears on the ropes and about to become cash generating partners when it comes to all things lith-poly. It's a move that still makes me giggle each time I think of it. That's one HELL of a move Lev and company have made. One Hell of a move.

Now let's see over the next year or so if they can effect end-game.

John~
