Pat, Tiger- OT-

What makes you think Nixon declined to pursue a recount because he feared the consequences of an examination of voting in downstate Illinois? This sounds a bit like a Nixon smear to me. Daly's Chicago had a notorious reputation for electoral corruption, with numerous dead people on the rolls, but somehow able to summon the strength to vote. I've never heard of any comparable charges about downstate IL. I think Nixon did not challenge the 1960 election because he thought it would be contrary to the vital interests of the United States for him to do so. A full-blown challenge could have taken months to resolve.

<< GeorgeW will be the first president to be the lead in
a national sit-com>>

I find this to be an inane statement. I for one will always bear in mind that George W Bush or Al "I Didn't Know There Was Fundraising Going On" Gore will be president of the US. And it is respect for that office that has caused people like me to be so angry with Bill Clinton's behavior and corruption. He has done more to lend a "sit-com" tenor to the Oval Office than I can imagine GWB doing. But it really isn't very funny: people have died because Clinton's inept, corrupt government.

You want examples of the last statement? Randy Weaver's 14 year old son shot in the back by an FBI sharpshooter as he ran back to his father's cabin. Or try the Weaver baby, who was resting in its mother's arms at the door to the cabin. Shot dead by an FBI sharpshooter. Then the FBI illegally purges the files and lies about doing so. Of course, Janet Reno saw no reason to investigate or prosecute- in fact, it was A-OK with her to promote the guy in charge of the operation to No. 2 in the FBI. Or how about 71 sailors on the USS Cole, which was in port in Aden in large part because the US Navy lacks sufficient oilers to refuel at sea. Undoubtedly part of the Clinton/Gore team's effort to streamline government.

<>and probably thinks Clinton was the first to abuse the Oval Office>>
Let's just say he raised it to a new low. He also established that laws to which the common citizen is subject- regarding perjury- do not apply to the President, at least while he is in office and Janet Reno is AG.

I am unaware of any requirement to have a sample ballot when voting in FL, so your charge is rather severe. It also sounds rather dubious to me, simply because I cannot imagine election officials arbitrarily imposing such a requirement. But if it's true, that student should certainly call 1.800.579.8871.

Finally, Tiger, the Gore folks are talking about extending the electoral process far beyond just waiting for a final tally, so your suggestion is rather disingenuous. Putting this though a state and federal judicial review- plus whatever remedies they might impose- would take a number of weeks, I imagine. And it was just that kind of limbo that Richard Nixon did not want to put the country through.
