Advanced Micro Devices AMD ($21.00)
Long-Term Attractive
Eric Rothdeutsch, Semiconductors/Computer Hardware
"Yesterday at its analyst conference, AMD highlighted its solid
positioning with the Athlon and Duron processors, continued solid execution of
its 0.18 micron, copper production ramp of Dresden, and a strong outlook for
flash memory," said Rothdeutsch. "However, the company also highlighted a
sluggish PC environment where it has seen a build up of PC inventories in the
channel. Sales of consumer PCs in October were slower than what the company
expected, and the company believes that consumer PC sales in October were
actually down year-over-year. The company feels that commercial and
enterprise demand in Europe and the U.S. has been slow, while consumer
business in Europe appears to be in better shape.
Japan appears stable, while
strong PC demand has been seen in Asia and South America. AMD stated that it
still expects to be sold out of Athlons in the fourth quarter of 2000 while
Duron sales will be limited by the lack of availability of chipsets with
integrated graphics, which should be widely available in the first quarter of
2001. Overall, consumer and small business demand appears to be driving AMD's
growth, and we believe the company continues to gain market share from Intel.
There is no change to our estimates. We are maintaining our Long-Term
Attractive rating."
