Well, the Romans, when dismantling the Kingdom of Israel in 70 or so AD, renamed that area "Palestine" (for the minority of Philistines that were still around what today is the gaza strip). The "Modern Palestinians" are descendant of non Jewish populations that immigrated into Palestine in the last century or so as well as population that was there (Arab and Jews) for generations (Palestine never ceased to have a local minoroty Jewish population in the last 2000 years). During the UN vote to split Palestine into two states, one half to become Israel and the other an Arab state (Palestine), the total population was about divided equally between Jews and Arabs. The psliting left few hunderd thousands Arabs within Israel (they have Israeli citizenship, truly, a second class citizenship since they are not allowed (nor to do they have the duty to) to serve in the armed forces, but other non Jewish sects like the Druse are).
