Fannie alone has direct loan guarantees of over $1 TRILLION, not to mention the mortgages they hold directly. If one were to consider the GSE loan guarantees together with outstanding indebtedness, the GSE liabilities are actually larger than the direct treasure obligations. That's an big burden for the taxpayer to shoulder if real estate prices were ever to reverse.
